Wolff Set to Sell Stake Valuing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6bn

Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a shareholding in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who each also own one-third of the company.

An official representative said: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Increase

The deal signifies a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Current Performance

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix so far and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight consecutive team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
