An Unprecedented Leader

• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
